At a time when I was struggling to raise my five children and constantly worrying about there being enough money, God taught me an amazing lesson. I was praying and seeking His wisdom when I heard, “Give Patty $100.” I’m thinking this isn’t the answer I was looking for, but the words nagged at me. Okay God if those words are yours, make a way because I can’t just walk up to someone and tell them God told me to give you this $100 without sounding crazy.
The next day I was at Patty’s house for her Garage sale. Someone asked about a beautiful trundle bed she was asking $125 for, but would take $100. The person shrugged and walked away. I said to Patty that I’d buy it. I scraped together the money. Patty helped me get it home. From the first night the bed was a blessing. My 2 year old twins never would sleep in cribs, but they did like sleeping in the trundle bed. From time to time, an older sibling would climb in with them and tell them a story.
In the years that followed the bed went off to college with my oldest daughter and a decade later with my youngest daughter when she moved into her first apartment. It was when she was moving again that she called to ask if I wanted it back, because the landlord wanted to buy the bed for his daughter . “He will give $100 for it!” Yes we sold him the bed. My problem had not been about having enough money. No, it was learning to trust that God would provide for us. So He gave me back the $100.
So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness,a]">[a] and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil. -Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 6, 31-34.
