In early April 2020, I learned an important lesson about the power of prayer. I was seriously injured in a freakish auto accident. I was alone in my garage, with the car in reverse, not park; I got out and the open door knocked me down to the floor. The moving car ripped the door partly off its upper hinge and trapped me with the damaged car door laying across my chest. As I lay there, I remember saying, “Please God, I don’t want to die like this.” That’s when the silence was broken by my neighbors’ nine-year-old daughter. My breathing was difficult, but somehow she heard my weak cries for help. That’s when I see God stepped in and sent help in the way of my wife, 911, my neighbor and his truck and passers-by. The card was pulled off me and I was rushed to St. Joes. In the Trauma room, multiple X-rays were taken, and 4 CT scans checked for internal organ damage. God, still watching over me, kept me away from Covid-19 exposure. I was released with 5 broken ribs, a crushing injury to the nerve in the right forearm, facial cuts, back cuts and a severely pulled left groin. God provided me with loving family members who gave me excellent care during my sequestered convalescence. At the end of 5 weeks I was fully healed. When I look back, I can see why the outcome was successful! The St. Andrew’s prayer chain was started, Fr. John and the staff prayed for me and my fellow members at the Knights of Columbus also prayed for me. Thank you to everyone who kept me in their prayers, IT WORKED. I don’t think I would be here today, if it wasn’t for prayer. -Paul Backlas (Saline)
